🪡 Pattern and Sewing Lead – Role & Responsibilities

Reports to: Production Manager
Position Type: Full-Time (40 hours/week)



Core Responsibilities & Expectations

The Pattern and Sewing Lead is responsible for ensuring the highest levels of consistency , quality , and efficiency in the cutting and sewing departments of the upholstery division. This role is critical to producing well-tailored, professional-quality covers for upholstered products by driving accuracy and standardization across all phases of pattern creation, sewing, and process documentation. The Pattern and Sewing Lead must identify opportunities for improvement, establish consistent processes, and collaborate closely with other department leads to ensure exceptional results without repetitive rework for each new COM (Customer’s Own Material). The role promotes open communication, accountability, and continuous process improvement to enhance the finished product’s quality and appearance.



Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Oversight
  • Serve as Lead Pattern Maker overseeing pattern creation and approval

  • Approve all COM / COL / PBD patterns for PBD upholstered seating

  • Own and continuously refine processes for the cutting and sewing departments

  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance product consistency and reduce errors


Pattern Management
  • Maintain accurate documentation for all pattern versions by textile type

  • Create and catalog try-on covers for upholstery trial, revising patterns/instructions as necessary

  • Communicate adjustments clearly and document for future reference


 

Job Requirements:


Process Coordination
  • Establish standardized procedures for cutters to:

    • Identify patterns used

    • Determine cutting layout for each COM

    • Decide when to stack vs single-lay cut

    • Select appropriate patterns per textile characteristics

    • Maintain cleanliness and labeling discipline

  • Work closely with sewers to:

    • Standardize sewing steps by pattern

    • Ensure consistency in thread colorstitch sizesalvage, and output quality

    • Maintain cleanliness and organize documentation (Sewer’s Manual)


Collaboration & Feedback
  • Partner with the Upholstery Lead to ensure proper alignment on pattern adjustments vs upholstery technique changes

  • Act as a liaison between departments to ensure all feedback is constructive, two-way, and action-driven

  • Communicate roadblocks, pattern issues, or team frustrations to the Production Manager or VP of Operations



Requirements
  • Fluent in spoken and written English

  • Deep knowledge of cutting, sewing, pattern layout, and upholstery

  • Strong leadership and communication skills

  • Excellent organizational habits and documentation ability

  • Ability to trainlead, and inspire team members to follow standardized expectations



Onboarding Steps
  1. Clarify Roles

    • Confirm understanding between Lead Upholsterer and Production Manager regarding people vs. process responsibilities

  2. Training & Support

    • Coordinate pattern training with internal leadership and/or outside consultants

  3. Define Process Responsibilities


Cutting
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization

  • Clearly document:

    • Keep vs discard decisions

    • Cataloging COM and associated pattern adjustments

    • Labeling instructions for cut pieces

    • Cutting method: stacked or single lay

    • Pattern selection by fabric type

    • Order priorities: Try-on vs Production


Sewing
  • Maintain organization and cleanliness

  • Document and follow:

    • Order priorities

    • Thread and stitch specs

    • Salvage expectations

    • Maintain and update Sewer’s Manual


Upholstery Coordination
  • Engage in continuous, open dialogue with Upholstery Lead

  • Determine whether adjustments should occur in the pattern or upholstery process
